Cyrus Highsmith – Big, easy, small, complex drawings - open lecture
The event was the result of cooperation started by Agnieszka Małecka-Kwiatkowska and Zofia Oslislo-Piekarska, teachers of the Writing and Sign subject at the Katowice Academy of Fine Arts.
Typeface design is full of contradictions. Sheriffs may complicate the structure of a letter, but they seem indispensable. Cyrus Highsmith illustrated the issue with his typefaces and spoke about his obsessions with shapes, repetitions and various methods of drawing. On 20th and 21st February the designer conducted workshops and gave an open lecture at ASP.
In 1997 Cyrus Highsmith graduated with distinction from Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. In the same year he started cooperation with Font Bureau, where he designs new typefaces. He teaches typography and typeface design at RISD and as a guest lecturer at various universities in the USA, Mexico and Europe. The British magazine “Eye” named Highsmith “one of today's truly original voices in American type design”. He is the author of the book titled Inside Paragraphs: typographic fundamentals.
