Cold War: 3 Oscar nominations
They did it again. AFA Katowice teachers Katarzyna Sobańska-Strzałkowska and Marcel Sławiński created set design for the film that has just received three Oscar nominations.
If the set design for a film was made by AFA Katowice teachers Katarzyna Sobańska-Strzałkowska and Marcel Sławiński, we can be sure that the production will be noticed in the world. We have just learnt that Paweł Pawlikowski’s Cold War has chances to receive 3 statuettes this year (in the categories of foreign language film, directing and cinematography).
At the 2016 Berlin Film Festival the Silver Bear went to Tomasz Wasilewski’s United States of Love (with Marcel and Katarzyna’s set design). A year before that, the Oscar went to Ida (also with their set design), and in 2012 Agnieszka Holland’s In Darkness received an Oscar nomination (again, with Katarzyna and Marcel’s set design).
‘We can surely call them wizards. They know how to create different worlds, which take our breath away with their beauty but at the same time remain detailed and coherent. Allan Starski believes that the work of a set designer is not just art but also a craft. The Sobańska-Sławiński duo seem to subscribe to this view,’ Polska Światłoczuła wrote about AFA Katowice teachers, Katarzyna Sobańska-Strzałkowska and Marcel Sławiński.
We keep our fingers crossed!
