Tadeusz Grabowski honoured with a sculpture?
The Artist Gallery of Katowice includes busts of distinguished artists who rendered great service to Katowice, chosen by popular votes. Tadeusz Grabowski is one of this year’s candidates. The vote is open till 31 March.
Professor Tadeusz Grabowski is well-known in the world of applied graphic art: winner of important competitions and prestigious exhibitions, artist with a unique style, included in numerous collections.
He took part in 120 group exhibitions in Poland and abroad, and authored 40 solo exhibitions. He received awards from the Mayor of Katowice, Minister of Culture, Prime Minister, Minister of National Education; his decorations include the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis.
Tadeusz Grabowski was born in Lviv in 1929. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, Faculty of Graphic Art in Katowice, and graduated with distinction in 1954. He worked at the school from 1955 to 1999, and from 2000 he taught at the Institute of Art of the University of Silesia, and at the University of Technology in Katowice.
He was the initiator and organiser of the Polish Poster Biennial in Katowice, which he founded in 1965. A year later, he became a co-organiser of the International Poster Biennial in Warsaw. He served as Katowice councillor in 1973-1984, and was a member of the Art Higher Education Council from 1976 to 2002. From 1977 to 2007 he presided over the regional committee of art competition for schools.
Tadeusz Grabowski inspired and shaped several generations of designers and poster artists. Artists such as prof. Jerzy Handermander, prof. Michał Kliś, prof. Roman Kalarus, prof. Kazimierz Cieślik, prof. Jerzy Duda-Gracz and Henryk Waniek realised their diploma projects in the the Poster Studio and Graphic Design Studio headed by him.
